Fish-en.com reveals his top five favourite and most successful lures from Canada lure giant, Bass Pro Shops.
Bass Pro Shops Zonk 120 Gataride (Hi Pitch)
Length 120mm – weight 20g – Owner ST-46 treble hooks. Cost £19.99
The Zonk 120 Gataride comes in two different versions, each with a different innovative-hinged front lip that creates a slightly different action – the Hi Pitch and the Yoro Yoro. The Bass Pro Shops Zonk 120 Gataride’s Hi Pitch is a very shallow diving lure and its hinged lip gives this lure an irresistible, aggressive searching action. In addition, the Zonk 120 Gataride has an internal tungsten weight transfer system, which means that it can be cast stupendous distances, and it has a unique cavity on its back which displaces water as the lure is retrieved, to aid further attraction. The Zonk 120 Gataride is a baitfish imitation (which reminds me of a Smelt) and is perfect for open coast rock marks. Fished with a steady retrieve, with the occasional twitch of the rod tip, it looks positively irresistible as it comes through the water! A word of warning… be careful not to damage the hinged lip in shallow water. Perfect for deep water Bassing!!
Bass Pro Shops X-140 SW
Length 140mm – weight 19.5g – Owner ST-46 treble hooks. Cost £21.99
The Bass Pro Shops X-140 SW is a floating, shallow diving lure which represents a large sandeel. It has a small bib to get it down into the zone where it will happily dive just under the surface to between 1-2ft. Is a perfect lure for calm, clear water conditions on shallow beaches, up estuaries or for fishing over shallow kelp beds. The X-120 is what’s described as a ‘Crank’ bait. A steady retrieve, with short downward strikes of the rod, will make the X-140 SW wiggle just under the surface, with a rolling/sliding action just like a natural sandeel. When you see any of the Bass Pro Shops lure range you will realise that no expense has been spared on these lures and like many of the others, the X-140 SW also features an internal tungsten weight transfer system, which means that it can be cast serious distances! Note: if you fish the Chanel Islands, where the natural sandeel (known as ‘Reds’) have a red/purple tint, the X-140 in Heat Iwashi, is a must have colour!!
Bass Pro Shops Flutt’a Bait
Length 100mm – weight 27g – Owner ST-46 treble hooks. Cost £18.99
The Bass Pro Shops Flutt’a Bait is the odd one out in this review because it isn’t a Hardbait, but it’s not out of place in any lure box. The Flutt’a Bait is what’s known as a light-casting jig – at 27g it’s seriously weighted and designed to reach fish at distance or at depth. With its articulated head, lack of a lip, and weighted body, the key to using this lure is not to retrieve it but to use the “Sink and Draw” method – letting the lure reach the bottom before lifting (jigging) the rod upwards and letting the lure flutter (hence the name Flutt’a) back down under it’s own weight and momentum until it reaches the bottom again, retrieving (taking up slack) on the downward motion of the rod. A perfect small baitfish representation, not only will the Bass Pro Shops Flutt’a Bait be great for shore fishing but vertical jigging from boats, too! A surefire winner for big Pollack from deep-water open coast marks!!
Bass Pro Shops Zonk 120
Length 120mm – weight 21g – Owner ST-46 treble hooks. Cost £19.99
The Bass Pro Shops Zonk 120 is another Crank bait and is the basic version of the Zonk 120 Gataride, but unlike it’s counterpart, it has no hinged front lip. However this doesn’t mean that it’s secondary to the Zonk Gataride as both lures have slightly different actions and suit slightly different conditions. Whereas you wouldn’t want to be chucking the Zonk Gataride, (with its hinged lip) right into the rough stuff, because the standard Zonk 120 has a solid fixed lip, you can fear not with this version. With a simple retrieve and occasional twitch of the rod tip, The Bass Pro Shops Zonk 120 will dive to depths between 5-7 ft. And, like the Zonk Gataride, it features a unique cavity on its back which displaces water as the lure is retrieved, to aid attraction, and features an internal tungsten weight transfer system, for long distance casting. Another awesome open-coast Bass lure!!
Bass Pro Shops X-120 SW
Length 120mm – weight 12.5g – Owner ST-46 treble hooks. Cost £19.99
I have to say the Bass Pro Shops X-120 SW has to be one of my favourite lures, if not my most favourite lure of 2022! The X-120 is the smaller brother of the X-140 above and like the Ima Calm 110 (in my last ‘Must Have’ lure reviews) is a because of its slender profile, it’s a perfect small sandeel representation. The Bass Pro Shops X-120 is a shallow, floating, simple Crank bait. Cast it and retrieve, perhaps add a twitch of the rod tip if you like, and the X-120 will roll and wiggle, side-to-side, just under the surface like a natural sandeel. The Bass Pro Shops X-120 SW features a lightweight internal tungsten weight transfer system to aid casting and is the perfect lure calm, clear water conditions on shallow beaches, up estuaries or for fishing over shallow kelp beds. I’ve had more takes on this lure than any other lure this year. One for the top of the box!
My view on the Bass Pro Shops range… definitely on the expensive side of lures, but you get what you pay for in this life and the Bass Pro Shops range is of outstanding design, quality and action! Three thumbs up!!
